The fire, which originated in a second-floor bedroom, was discovered by a third-floor occupant. The Hagerstown Fire Department responded with 50 firefighters and managed to control the blaze within 45 minutes. The smoke alarms in the building were present and activated, though the structure lacked a fire alarm and sprinkler system. Damage to the property is estimated at $80,000, with an additional $20,000 in content losses.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical failure at an outlet in the second-floor bedroom. The American Red Cross is providing support to multiple residents who were displaced by the fire.
