The commission will consist of five members. Three appointments have been made by Governor Moore: Senator Angela Alsobrooks will serve as the commission’s chair, former Attorney General Brian Frosh is another appointee, and Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss rounds out the governor’s selections. The presiding officers of the Maryland General Assembly, or their designated representatives, will also be part of the commission. The commission is set to commence its operations this month, focusing on soliciting public input regarding the existing congressional maps.

The establishment of this commission comes at a time when discussions surrounding electoral map fairness are prominent. The commission’s mandate is to consider mid-cycle redistricting and to provide recommendations to both the Governor and the Maryland General Assembly. According to the announcement, this process is intended to enhance the current map and ensure that Maryland’s congressional districts accurately reflect the will of its constituents. The commission’s public hearings and feedback solicitation are key components of its mission to gather diverse perspectives from throughout Maryland.
