The Road to Careers program, established in 2024 through a collaborative effort between the Maryland Department of Labor and the Maryland Department of Transportation, seeks to expand access to both pre-apprenticeship and Registered Apprenticeship opportunities. A distinctive feature of this program is its provision of comprehensive wraparound services, which include crucial support such as transportation assistance, childcare, and mental health services. These services are intended to mitigate common barriers that often hinder individuals from completing training programs and maintaining long-term employment.
The initiative is designed to meet the growing demand for highly skilled professionals within the transportation and construction industries. Furthermore, it aims to create accessible career pathways for individuals who have historically encountered systemic employment challenges. This includes prioritizing support for individuals with low incomes, those with justice system involvement, and English language learners, ensuring that opportunities are available to a diverse range of Marylanders.
Organizations seeking to participate in this funding round can apply through a competitive grant process. Successful applicants will be tasked with delivering training programs that are directly aligned with the requirements of the transportation and construction industries. A significant component of their responsibility will involve providing holistic support to guide participants from their initial enrollment through to successful job placement and retention.
The deadline for submitting applications for this round of funding is January 23, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Award recipients are expected to be announced in April 2026. The program is open to a variety of eligible organizations, including local workforce boards, non-profit organizations, labor unions, community colleges, and other established training providers.
A pre-proposal conference is scheduled to take place on November 3 at 2 p.m. Interested parties are encouraged to RSVP by emailing road2.careers@maryland.gov. Further details about the Road to Careers program and the application process can be found on the Maryland Department of Labor’s website at labor.maryland.gov/employment/roadtocareers.shtml.
