Authorities say 49-year-old Omar Shariff Harrison of Waldorf, Maryland poured gasoline on a bed in which his wife was sleeping and down a staircase, then ignited the sheets. Fortunately, the woman and two children were able to escape without injury and called 911. Investigators determined that Harrison extinguished the fire before fleeing, and damage was limited to about $500. The fire appeared to be a continuation of an earlier domestic dispute, during which Harrison allegedly made threats to burn down the home.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Harrison later that morning during a traffic stop. He was taken to the Charles County Detention Center, where he is currently being held pending a bond hearing. Harrison is charged with attempted murder, arson, malicious burning, reckless endangerment, and making arson threats.

No injuries were reported, but the seriousness of the charges and the circumstances of the alleged crime could lead to significant prison time if Harrison is convicted. Residents are reminded to report domestic violence and threats of harm immediately, as early intervention can prevent more severe outcomes. The Office of the State Fire Marshal urges anyone in need of fire safety resources to reach out through its hotline or website.
