The issue was traced back to a supplier, Sesé Industrial Services Corp. in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where programming and process errors during bolt installation were discovered. Although no crashes, injuries, or deaths have been reported, Volkswagen has confirmed five warranty claims—four of which were in the U.S.—linked to the problem. Owners may hear unusual noises if a bolt loosens while driving, which could serve as an early warning sign.
Volkswagen has identified 100% of the involved vehicles as having the defect based on production records. The affected models include various production runs of the Volkswagen ID.4 (2023 and 2024), Atlas, and Atlas Cross Sport (2023–2025). All affected vehicles will receive free repairs consisting of bolt replacements that meet proper specifications.

As part of the recall plan, dealers were notified on June 27, 2025, and Volkswagen will notify owners by August 22, 2025. The company has advised vehicle owners not to drive or to park the vehicle outside until the issue is resolved. If your vehicle is part of the recall, Volkswagen will cover the full cost of repairs. Owners can check their VINs starting June 27 to determine whether their vehicle is included in the recall.
