Residents of Funkstown will see significant changes to their trash collection services beginning July 1, 2025, as the town adopts an automated system designed to streamline pickup and improve safety. The updates include the introduction of J&J-provided containers and the use of an automated arm truck operated by a single driver. While trash pickup days will stay the same, new guidelines for container use and holiday scheduling will take effect.

We need your help to stay paywall free

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

Will you be one of the 5%?

Each household will receive one 95-gallon toter at no cost. The containers will remain the property of J&J and must be returned if the town changes service providers in the future. Residents may request a smaller 65-gallon version if needed. Only trash placed inside the approved toters will be collected; garbage left on the ground or in non-toter-style containers will be excluded. Extra trash may be placed in a resident’s own toter-style can or a second J&J container, which can be rented for $5 per month plus a one-time $20 delivery fee.

The town emphasized that damage to personal containers will not be covered, though J&J will repair or replace damaged wheels or lids on their own containers at no cost. If a toter is lost or damaged due to negligence, a replacement fee of $75 will be charged, though it remains undetermined whether this will be paid by the resident or the town. Each container will be marked with a serial number linked to the assigned residence for tracking.

Despite the operational overhaul, weekly trash collection will continue on Wednesdays. However, in the event of a holiday falling on or before a Wednesday, pickup will follow a “slide” schedule, moving back one day. Yard waste collection policies remain mostly unchanged and will still take place on Wednesdays, regardless of any holiday delays affecting regular trash service. Yard waste must be placed in brown recyclable bags or empty cans and kept separate from household waste.
