The incident began when a Land Rover refused to stop at the immigration checkpoint on state Route 286. Air support from U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations tracked the fleeing vehicle as it traveled northbound at high speed. Ground agents attempted to stop the car using lights and sirens, but the driver continued recklessly, weaving through oncoming traffic. Although spike strips were deployed, the vehicle did not stop until it crashed into another car. All three occupants attempted to flee on foot but were quickly caught by responding agents.
The driver, identified as a U.S. citizen with a lengthy criminal history, is now facing multiple federal charges, including human smuggling, fleeing law enforcement, and endangering lives. Authorities also detained two passengers—an adult and a juvenile—both Mexican nationals. The adult is reported to have an extensive criminal record, while both individuals are being processed for unlawful entry into the United States.
