The trend, known as the “Chromebook Challenge,” involves students inserting conductive objects into the charging ports of their electronic devices, causing short circuits and, in some cases, battery ignition.

As of May 5, multiple cases have been reported across the state in both personal and school-issued devices. The activity has led to sparks, smoke, and thermal runaway battery reactions, with several incidents forcing school evacuations and triggering emergency responses. Disciplinary actions have been taken in various districts where the challenge has surfaced.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal, led by Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray, has issued a public advisory calling for greater awareness and education around the misuse of electronic devices. The agency urges parents, teachers, and school administrators to engage in proactive discussions with students about the risks associated with such behavior.
