At approximately 3:00 a.m. on May 2, a 2014 Wabash semi-trailer owned by Abilene Motor Express Inc. caught fire after the vehicle experienced a rear tire blowout while traveling westbound on Interstate 70. The driver exited the highway in an attempt to reach a nearby truck stop, but upon doing so, noticed heavy smoke and flames emerging from the rear section of the trailer.
Firefighters from the Williamsport Volunteer Fire and EMS department responded to the single-alarm incident with a crew of 15. The area of origin was identified near the trailer’s rear axles, and the fire was classified as accidental in nature based on a preliminary investigation. There were no reported injuries or fatalities.

The fire resulted in an estimated $75,000 in damages to the trailer and its contents. No smoke or fire suppression systems were in place on the vehicle, which is standard for many commercial trailers. The trailer’s driver was the first to discover the fire and promptly contacted emergency services.
