Washington County has expanded its land preservation efforts with the acquisition of a nearly 50-acre farm through its Rural Legacy Program, adding to the over 42,000 acres of permanently protected land within its borders. The Rural Legacy Program, a key element in the county’s broader preservation strategy, accounts for more than 9,300 acres, representing about 22% of all permanently protected land locally. Managed at the state level by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and administered locally by Washington County’s Land Preservation Office, the program focuses on safeguarding properties with agricultural, historical, and environmental significance. The newly acquired easement was part of the fiscal year 2024 cycle, with applications submitted by January and offers extended in the fall.
In addition to the Rural Legacy Program, Washington County maintains a comprehensive land conservation approach that includes initiatives such as the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, Project Open Space, the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Program, and others. These efforts are supported by a combination of state, federal, and local funding sources, with the county recently increasing its financial contributions to strengthen these preservation programs.
