More than 1,000 replica firearms and suppressors have been intercepted and seized at Los Angeles International Airport since the start of fiscal year 2025, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The operation, carried out in collaboration with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is part of an ongoing effort to prevent the illegal entry of imitation weapons into the United States, where their presence could pose significant risks to public safety.

The seized items, which originated from China and were shipped via air parcel, were misdeclared as “Alloy Miniature Toys” in an attempt to avoid detection. Of the confiscated goods, CBP has already destroyed 953 replica firearms, 111 replica suppressors, and 92 abandoned suppressors. The agency notes that while these items may not be functional, their realistic appearance could result in dangerous misidentification, especially by law enforcement responding to public incidents.

Federal law mandates that imitation firearms include a blaze orange tip or stripe to distinguish them from real weapons. In California, further restrictions make public display of such items potentially subject to criminal charges. Authorities warn that unmarked replica guns could obstruct law enforcement investigations and create confusion during emergency responses.

Since fiscal year 2022, nearly 2,900 replica firearms have been confiscated at U.S. ports of entry. CBP also works with external organizations, including trade enforcement groups and consumer safety agencies, to ensure non-compliant products do not reach consumers.
