In Chester, Queen Anne’s County, a fire broke out at 12:33 p.m. involving a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado parked in a driveway at 102 Kirby Street. Officials believe an unspecified electrical failure in the vehicle’s engine compartment sparked the blaze. The fire spread to the nearby residence, likely accelerated by wind and the vehicle’s proximity to the structure. The homeowner, Donald Jones, sustained non-life-threatening smoke inhalation injuries while trying to extinguish the fire and was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $50,000. Smoke alarms were not present in the home. The American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.
Later that afternoon in Waldorf, Charles County, firefighters responded to a house fire at 2345 Progress Court. The blaze, which started in the attic area around the furnace, rendered the two-story single-family home uninhabitable. The fire, reported at 4:01 p.m. by a neighbor, caused an estimated $350,000 in damage. No injuries were reported. Smoke alarms in the home were present and activated, aiding in alerting neighbors. The Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department controlled the fire within 30 minutes, with 48 firefighters on the scene.
