The Frederick News-Post (FNP) announced it will no longer allow comments on its online articles, shifting its focus to more structured forms of public engagement, such as letters to the editor and op-ed columns. The move aims to foster a more civil and productive dialogue, as the publication moves away from anonymous comment threads often marked by personal attacks and negativity. The change will take effect Tuesday.

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.
If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.
Will you be one of the 5%?

FNP has provided a platform for anonymous comments for many years, offering a mix of lively discussions and occasionally creative input. However, the organization stated that too often, the discussions devolved into disrespectful exchanges that did not align with its standards for public discourse. The publication emphasized its desire for contributors to take accountability by attaching their names to opinions, believing this would lead to more thoughtful and constructive contributions.
In addition to focusing on letters to the editor, FNP will host a public session titled “LTE Academy” at the C. Burr Artz Library in Frederick on March 15. The event will offer guidance on opinion writing and encourage community participation. FNP’s editorial staff will continue to accept and review letters, prioritizing local issues and maintaining editorial standards for civility and accuracy.
