The westernmost counties of North Carolina have introduced the “Rediscover the Great Smoky Mountains” initiative to boost tourism and economic recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. To encourage visitors to return, major attractions across the Smokies region are offering special promotions. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in Bryson City is providing a 50% discount on select train tickets through March 31. The Nantahala Outdoor Center is offering discounted lodging for spring visitors, while Cherokee cultural attractions, including the “Unto These Hills” outdoor drama and the Museum of the Cherokee People, are featuring VIP packages. Additionally, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort and Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel are running promotions to celebrate the latter’s 10th anniversary.
This initiative coincides with the scheduled March 1, 2025 re-opening of I-40. Highway I-40 serves as the primary route for visitors coming to the Smokies region from the north.
The campaign aims to assure potential visitors that the region’s outdoor recreation areas, cultural sites, and hospitality businesses are fully operational. Organizers hope this collaborative effort will restore economic stability to local communities still feeling the financial effects of the hurricane. For more details on the initiative or to plan a visit, information is available at Visit Smokies’ official website.
