The production kicked off this past weekend with a deep dive into the myth of the Snallygaster, Maryland’s infamous half-bird, half-reptile creature said to haunt the rural hills and hollows of the state. Production crews spent the day exploring a suspected Snallygaster roost near the C&O Canal in the Frog Hollow and Dargan area. This location, nestled in a thickly wooded landscape in Washington County, has a history of eerie tales and sightings reported by local residents over the past century.
Radio Free Hub City’s producer and series director shared that the Snallygaster investigation will delve into both historical and modern accounts of sightings, as well as explore the possible connections between the Snallygaster and similar legendary creatures reported in other parts of the United States. The team’s goal is to blend storytelling with real investigation, capturing Maryland’s unique mix of history and mystery.

“We’ve all heard about the Snallygaster, especially growing up here,” said Ken Buckler from Radio Free Hub City. “But to actually visit the sites, talk to people who’ve seen strange things, and piece together the history—it gives you chills. There’s something about these stories that just doesn’t go away, and we’re excited to share that experience with viewers.”
Radio Free Hub City, known for its commitment to local news and unique programming, sees the series as a way to bring attention to the region’s fascinating folklore. The team plans to bring on on local historians, researchers, and witnesses who claim to have seen strange creatures in the area. Interviews with these experts will be paired with reenactments or illustrations of notable encounters, adding a dramatic flair to each episode.
Future episodes of the series will go beyond the Snallygaster, tackling other Maryland legends and cryptids such as the elusive Dwayyo, a wolf-like creature reportedly seen in the state’s western forests, and the Goatman of Prince George’s County. Each episode promises to shed light on the origins of these stories, their evolution over time, and what they say about Maryland’s unique cultural heritage.
