Hagerstown Gears Up for a Summer Packed with Free Events and Community Gatherings

Hagerstown, Maryland residents are invited to a diverse array of free events and activities throughout the summer, from live music and outdoor movies to community block parties and a bustling farmers market. Per a series of announcements regarding upcoming local programming, the city is set to host a variety of happenings designed to bring the community together. These events, organized by various city departments and local organizations, span music, food, recreation, and family-friendly entertainment, offering something for everyone to enjoy during the warmer months.

The summer’s festivities kick off with the MDWK Music & Market series, held on select Wednesdays at University Plaza from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. These events feature free live music from local bands, a vendor market hosted by The Outsider Social, and rotating food trucks. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to enjoy the performances. The series will showcase a range of musical genres, including funk, soul, R&B, bluegrass, roots rock, blues, and rock and roll, with performances scheduled on July 22, July 29, August 5, August 12, and August 19.

Adding to the weekly entertainment, the City of Hagerstown is hosting a series of Community Block Parties on select Thursdays throughout the summer. These free events aim to connect neighbors with elected officials, city staff, and local resources. The block parties are scheduled to take place near East Ave on July 23, at Mulberry Lofts on July 30, at Hager Park on August 13, and at Hagerstown Church on August 20. Each party is set to run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., providing an opportunity for residents to engage with their community in a relaxed, informal setting.

Families looking for weekend activities have several options. The Downtown Hagerstown Main Street is organizing a Summer Block Party on South Potomac Street on Saturday, July 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This event promises inflatable fun for children, including a bounce house, mini-golf, and inflatable axe-throwing. Adjacent to this, also on South Potomac Street, CandyFest will offer an interactive, sensory-engaging experience designed for young children and families, running from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on July 25 and again from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26.

For those interested in local produce and artisan goods, the City Farmers Market will be held at Hub City Brewery, located at 25 W Church St, on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This market provides an opportunity to purchase fresh food and shop from local vendors, with scheduled dates on July 26, August 2, August 9, August 16, August 23, and August 30. The market is sponsored by the City of Hagerstown in partnership with Hub City Brewery.

The summer also features the Ruthann V. Monroe Summer Basketball League, which will be held at Wheaton Park on Sundays. Middle and high school students will compete, with free admission to games throughout the season, culminating in championship games on August 23. Complementing these athletic events, the Hagerstown Municipal Band will present free concerts at the City Park Bandshell on Sundays at 7:00 p.m., with performances scheduled for July 26 and August 9. Other concerts will take place at North Hagerstown High School on August 2 and at City Park Bandshell on August 16 and August 23, featuring various soloists and a tribute to John Philip Sousa.

Outdoor movie screenings are also on the agenda, with free showings in City Park. Presented by Maryland Physicians Care, “Lilo & Stitch” will be shown on Friday, July 31, and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” will be featured on Friday, August 7, both beginning at 7:00 p.m. with pre-movie activities. Attendees are advised to bring blankets or lawn chairs, and concessions will be available.

Community engagement continues with a Community Yard Sale at Fairgrounds Park on Saturday, August 8, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., inviting residents to shop for unique finds. Also on August 8, Hagerstown City Park will host a Plein Air Art Festival, encouraging artists of all abilities to participate in an open-air creative day with the theme “History is Our Nature.”

The National Night Out event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, at Fairgrounds Park from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., featuring live music from the Hagerstown Municipal Band. Additionally, the Krumpe’s Donut Alley Rally 5K, a run/walk benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project and Mason-Dixon Warrior Adventures, will take place on Friday, August 14, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Krumpe’s Do-Nut Shop.
