Maryland State Police are launching enhanced patrols and increased driving under the influence (DUI) enforcement efforts across the state in anticipation of the Fourth of July holiday weekend. These initiatives aim to prevent traffic-related injuries and fatalities by deterring dangerous driving behaviors. Troopers will be more visible on roadways from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5, with the specialized State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team actively working to identify and apprehend impaired drivers.

The increased enforcement is part of a broader strategy to ensure public safety during holiday celebrations. Maryland State Police will collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and state entities to maximize enforcement and community awareness campaigns. These campaigns often utilize social media to reach a wide audience with important safety messages. Motorists are urged to plan ahead and make responsible choices to help prevent crashes and save lives on the road this holiday.
For individuals attending Fourth of July festivities, several key recommendations are being emphasized. It is strongly advised to designate a sober driver and to surrender your car keys to them. Alcohol consumption should be avoided if you intend to drive. Alternatives such as public transportation, taxis, or ride-sharing services are encouraged. Attendees should also intervene if they believe a friend is planning to drive while impaired, and are asked to report any suspected impaired driving to the police. Regardless of plans, always wearing a seatbelt is a critical safety measure. Furthermore, drivers are reminded to refrain from texting, engaging in other distracted driving behaviors, or using a hand-held cell phone while operating a vehicle.
For those hosting Fourth of July gatherings, liability for impaired driving crashes that involve guests who have been served alcohol is a serious concern. Hosts are advised to offer abundant food and non-alcoholic beverage options. Ensuring that guests have access to sober drivers or alternative transportation is crucial. It is also helpful to have contact information for local taxi services readily available. Hosts should take the initiative to prevent any guest who appears impaired from driving away from the event.
The financial support for these increased enforcement operations includes funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office, which helps offset some of the associated costs for the state.
