CECIL COUNTY, MD – A Cecil County man has died following a catastrophic explosion involving a nitrous oxide cylinder at his residence on Friday night, according to an announcement from the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal. The incident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. on June 5, 2026, at a property located on Walnut Grove Road.
Investigators determined that the explosion originated from a 10-pound nitrous oxide cylinder situated at the rear exterior of a vehicle parked at the home. The vehicle had recently been acquired for racing purposes and was equipped with a nitrous oxide system. For reasons that remain under investigation, the cylinder experienced a critical failure and detonated.

The powerful blast critically injured 33-year-old Thomas Logue. First responders from the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and immediately initiated life-saving efforts. Emergency medical personnel from Singerly, Chesapeake City, and the Cecil County Department of Emergency Services continued advanced medical interventions before transporting Logue by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Delaware. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Logue’s 30-year-old wife also sustained minor injuries during the incident. She was transported to Christiana Hospital for evaluation and treatment and has since been released.
Deputy State Fire Marshals remained at the scene throughout the night, conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Nitrous oxide, a liquefied gas stored under high pressure in specialized cylinders, is commonly used in automotive racing to enhance engine performance. The gas poses significant dangers when exposed to excessive heat, physical damage, or mechanical failure, which can lead to a substantial increase in internal pressure. A failure of the cylinder under such conditions can result in a violent rupture, projecting deadly shrapnel.
While the precise cause of the cylinder’s failure is still being determined, investigators are considering the possibility that elevated temperatures may have been a contributing factor. Extreme heat within an enclosed vehicle, for instance, can cause liquid nitrous oxide to expand rapidly, dramatically increasing internal pressure beyond the cylinder’s structural limits. The investigation into this fatal incident is ongoing.
