According to the preliminary investigation, the deceased, identified as Robert Pierce, was operating a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer southbound on US Route 1. For reasons yet to be determined, the vehicle reportedly crossed the center line, sideswiping a northbound 2023 Honda CR-V. The Mercury then continued into the northbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a 2006 Peterbilt tractor trailer. Following the impact, the Mercury left the roadway. Emergency services personnel pronounced Pierce deceased at the scene. The drivers of the Honda CR-V and the tractor trailer sustained no injuries.

The Maryland State Police North East Barrack responded to the incident. The Maryland Department of Transportation assisted with managing road closures, which led to the shutdown of Conowingo Road for the duration of the investigation. The Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division was also present to inspect the tractor trailer. The Crash Team of the Maryland State Police is continuing to lead the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
