The Fort Detrick military community recently convened for its annual Heroes Walk ceremony, an event dedicated to honoring Gold Star Families and commemorating service members who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation. The ceremony, which took place on the Blue & Gray Parade Field, featured a poignant display of 250 American flags and red roses, accompanied by patriotic placards bearing the names and likenesses of those being remembered.
This significant event was jointly organized by Fort Detrick Garrison Commander Col. Chris Chung and Maj. Gen. Paula Lodi, who serves as the senior commander of Fort Detrick and the commander of the U.S. Army Medical Research & Development Command. Attendees at the ceremony included family members of eleven fallen service members: Staff Sgt. Bryan Tomaszewski, Sgt. Blain Gatrell, Pfc. Semaj Hunter, Sgt. William Scott, Spc. Taylor Sherwood, Sgt. David Smith, Sgt. 1st Class Lange Vogeler, Sgt. Diana Molina, Master Sgt. Ashley Henning, Sgt. David Williams, and Capt. Jennifer Odom.

Col. Chung remarked that the expansive display of flags and placards lining Porter Street serves a dual purpose as both a memorial and a celebration of lives dedicated to service. He highlighted that the visual testament of patriotism represents the nation’s highest ideals and the individuals who acted upon their commitment to country. Each placard, Chung noted, tells a personal story of sacrifice, representing sons, daughters, spouses, and parents who answered the call to serve and demonstrated their love for freedom through action.
Addressing the Gold Star Families present, Col. Chung acknowledged the profound and often unseen burden they carry with remarkable resilience. He underscored the military installation’s unwavering commitment to providing support to these families, emphasizing that this commitment is a deep responsibility and a privilege. Fort Detrick’s Survivor Outreach Services actively provides ongoing assistance, including financial, educational, healthcare, and housing support, to families residing in Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia. This initiative reflects the enduring promise that the commitment to a service member and their family does not end with their military service.
The commemorative display along Porter Street is scheduled to remain in place for several weeks, offering an extended opportunity for reflection. Col. Chung encouraged both community members and those passing by to take time to consider the individuals represented by the names and faces on display. He urged attendees to move beyond mourning and to find inspiration and a reason to smile when reflecting on the legacy of these heroes, resolving to live lives that honor the profound sacrifice made.
