Over 90,000 Washington County Maryland Voters Sent Incorrect Primary Election Date by Board of Elections

The Washington County Board of Elections recently sent out over 92,000 sample ballot packets to registered Washington County voters who did not request a mail-in ballot. The mailed sample ballot packets are intended to inform voters about their options for participating in the Gubernatorial Primary Election, but contained the wrong date for the Election Day. This comes immediately after significant controversy regarding all mail-in ballots having to be resent due to printing errors.

The error appears on the second page of the sample ballot, within the section detailing voting methods. Under the heading “You have 3 ways to vote,” the second option incorrectly states “Vote on Election Day November 5.” The correct date for Election Day in this primary election is June 23, 2026. This mistake could potentially cause confusion for voters regarding the proper date to cast their ballots on Election Day.

With over 103,000 registered voters in Washington County as of May 31st, a significant portion of the electorate received these sample ballots. While over 11,000 voters opted to receive mail-in ballots, the remaining 92,000-plus voters were sent the packets that contained the printing error. These packets are designed to provide a preview of what each voter’s ballot will look like, confirm the location of their designated Election Day polling place, and outline the available voting methods for the 2026 Gubernatorial Primary Election.
