The Leesburg Police Department has announced the promotion of Chris Mongelluzzo to the rank of Captain, as detailed in a press release from the department. Captain Mongelluzzo will assume command of the Field Operations Bureau, the department’s largest division. This promotion marks a significant advancement for an officer with extensive experience in various facets of law enforcement within the town.
Captain Mongelluzzo’s career in law enforcement began in 2005 with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, followed by his joining the Leesburg Police Department in 2008. His tenure with the department has been marked by a diverse range of responsibilities, including roles in field operations, crisis negotiations, and as a field training officer. His progression through the ranks saw him promoted to Sergeant in 2016 and then to Lieutenant in 2022. In his previous role as Lieutenant, he held leadership positions across several key divisions, including Field Operations, School Resource Services, and Criminal Investigations. He also served as the department’s K-9 Commander. During his leadership of the Criminal Investigations Division, he was instrumental in overseeing numerous high-profile cases, collaborating with both internal teams and external agencies to ensure effective case management and uphold high standards of service and accountability. Most recently, Captain Mongelluzzo held the position of Senior Watch Commander, where he was responsible for the oversight of patrol operations and ensuring that departmental standards and community expectations were consistently met.

Further demonstrating his commitment to professional development, Captain Mongelluzzo is a graduate of the Professional Executive Leadership School (PELS) in 2023. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from Columbia Southern University in February 2026. The Field Operations Bureau, which he will now lead, is tasked with providing continuous patrol services, responding to public safety calls, implementing proactive policing strategies, managing traffic enforcement, and engaging with the community across the entire Town of Leesburg.
