The Main Street America Accreditation acknowledges organizations that demonstrate a strong commitment to their communities and implement the comprehensive Main Street Approach. This approach focuses on transforming older and historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts into vibrant hubs for economic activity and community life. Downtown Hagerstown Main Street is now among 838 organizations nationwide to hold this accreditation, joining a network of over 1,600 communities actively engaged in district revitalization efforts across the United States. This accreditation serves as a powerful indicator of success and a signal to stakeholders that the program is part of a well-established movement with a proven history of generating economic returns and fostering welcoming environments.
The evaluation process for Downtown Hagerstown Main Street’s accreditation involved assessments of its performance by both its internal personnel and board of directors, as well as by Main Street Maryland, a partner organization that collaborates with Main Street America to ensure local programs meet stringent national standards. These standards are designed to provide a robust framework for reviewing progress, identifying strengths, understanding emerging trends, and developing strategies to further advance Main Street programs. To earn the top Accredited status, communities must showcase a track record of achieving positive outcomes aligned with the Main Street Approach and demonstrate exceptional performance across six key areas: broad-based community commitment to revitalization, inclusive leadership and organizational capacity, diversified and sustainable funding, strategy-driven programming, preservation-based economic development, and measurable impact and results.
In the past year, Main Street America programs collectively generated $9.4 billion in local reinvestment, supported the establishment of 6,936 new businesses, facilitated the creation of 36,549 jobs, led to the rehabilitation of 10,623 historic buildings, and benefited from 1.8 million volunteer hours. These figures indicate that, on average, every dollar invested in the operational expenses of a Main Street program yielded $23.13 in reinvestment within its downtown district. Building on this national success, Downtown Hagerstown Main Street has continued to experience significant growth. Through the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s Project Restore 2.0 program, the district secured a $300,000 investment that aided in the launch of six new small businesses within downtown Hagerstown. Furthermore, the program allocated over $54,000 in grant funding for downtown events, supporting 28 community events and contributing to a total of more than 120 events held downtown through partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and city departments. Public art and beautification initiatives have also seen considerable expansion in 2025 and 2026, with the addition of 14 new murals that are part of the National Mural Awards and the Hagerfest Music & Art Festival, enhancing downtown Hagerstown’s appeal as a regional destination for arts, culture, dining, and entertainment. Collaborations with entities such as Good News Hagerstown, Visit Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars, and various local businesses have further supported ongoing beautification projects, public programming, and volunteer efforts aimed at improving the overall downtown experience.
