Petro began her journey with NASA in 2007, following a career that spanned various military and industry roles. Throughout her time with the agency, she steadily advanced through leadership positions, ultimately becoming the 11th director of the Kennedy Space Center. In this capacity, she was responsible for overseeing the center’s extensive team of civil service and contractor employees, shaping and implementing center policies, and managing the execution of the spaceport’s numerous missions and agency program responsibilities. Prior to her directorship, Petro served as deputy director and acting director, where she was instrumental in guiding the center’s transition into a multi-user facility. This involved collaborating with entities such as the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Air Force to streamline governmental processes and support the burgeoning commercial space sector by enhancing government efficiency and minimizing redundant efforts.

Beyond her leadership at the Kennedy Space Center, Petro held significant roles at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. These positions included serving as program executive for an agency-wide initiative focused on restructuring mission support functions, a key effort aimed at improving NASA’s overall efficiency and effectiveness. Her professional background also includes extensive management experience with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Corporation, where she engaged with NASA, the U.S. military, and commercial organizations on a range of aerospace and military programs.

Petro’s career began after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a bachelor of science degree in engineering in 1981. She was part of the second graduating class at West Point to include women. She furthered her education by obtaining a master of science degree in business administration from Boston University’s Metropolitan College. Her significant contributions and dedication have been recognized with numerous awards, including a President’s Distinguished Executive award and the astronaut-selected Silver Snoopy award for her outstanding performance contributing to flight safety and mission success. In 2018, she was inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame by Governor Rick Scott. Petro also played a leading role in the senior management team that received the 2019 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Sammies Management Excellence Medal. Her impact on the aerospace industry in Florida was further acknowledged in 2022 with the Dr. Kurt H. Debus Award from the National Space Club Florida Committee.

Effective immediately upon Petro’s retirement announcement, Kelvin Manning will assume the role of acting center director. Manning brings over 32 years of leadership and technical expertise to this interim position, having previously served as the deputy center director.
