According to details presented in court, on Christmas Eve 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers initiated a traffic stop on Sousa-Martins’s vehicle. Officers used their own vehicles to surround and immobilize his van. After exiting their vehicles and identifying themselves, officers instructed Sousa-Martins to exit his vehicle, but he refused. In response, officers broke the driver’s side window and attempted to remove him. Sousa-Martins then put his vehicle in drive, moved a short distance, and subsequently maneuvered his van back and forth between the government vehicles before reversing into the vehicle directly behind him. He continued to reverse, pushing that vehicle into another government vehicle, causing damage to both.
This case is part of “Operation Take Back America,” a broad initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and addressing violent crime.
