Department of Homeland Security (DHS) law enforcement officers, specifically those with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), are experiencing an unprecedented surge in vehicle ramming attacks this year. These incidents, which have more than doubled compared to the same period last year, pose significant risks to the safety of officers and the public, according to DHS. The increase in these dangerous encounters is attributed to what DHS describes as “far-left rhetoric” and the “demonization of law enforcement.”

Since January 20, there have been 99 documented vehicle attacks against federal law enforcement officers nationwide. This figure represents a substantial increase from the 47 attacks recorded during the comparable timeframe in the previous year. Breaking down the numbers, CBP has faced 71 vehicular assaults this year, a 58% rise from the 45 incidents last year. ICE has seen an even more dramatic escalation, with 28 vehicular attacks reported, a staggering 1,300% increase from the two incidents recorded during the same period in the prior year.

These attacks are not isolated events but have been occurring with concerning frequency across various locations. Recent incidents illustrate the severity of the threat. In November, an individual with pending assault charges intentionally rammed an ICE vehicle in Adelphi, Maryland, before fleeing and striking another vehicle. The suspect, described as a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador, was apprehended by ICE officers. In Chicago, Border Patrol encountered four separate vehicle ramming attacks on a single day in November, leading to the arrest of four suspects, though one managed to evade capture after a controlled tire deflation device was deployed.

Earlier in October, Chicago again saw multiple vehicular attacks against law enforcement during immigration enforcement operations, with several arrested suspects reportedly having criminal histories, including a gang member with prior weapons and DUI convictions. Another incident in Chicago involved an illegal alien who rammed CBP vehicles and attempted to flee before being stopped by Border Patrol using an immobilization technique. Both the driver and a passenger, identified as illegal aliens from Venezuela, were arrested on charges related to assault on a federal agent.

Illinois also experienced two separate vehicular assaults targeting ICE officers on the same day in October, with suspects in both instances being criminal illegal aliens who were subsequently arrested. In September, an ICE officer was injured in Homestead, Florida, when a driver, described as an illegal alien from Guatemala, reversed into the officer during a traffic stop and then rammed multiple ICE vehicles before colliding with a utility van. The driver and three other individuals, all reportedly illegal aliens, were arrested in connection with this incident. These events highlight the potential for serious injury or fatality to officers and bystanders alike. DHS has stated that individuals who attack law enforcement, particularly by using their vehicles as weapons, will face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.
