Maryland State Police are leading an investigation into the death of an inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution (NBCI) in Allegany County. The deceased has been identified as 23-year-old Omar Valdez-Granados, who was serving a state prison sentence at the facility. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Valdez-Granados deceased at the scene, and his body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of his death.

Investigators with the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit were alerted to the incident on the morning of April 28, 2026, by personnel from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IIU). Initial findings suggest that Valdez-Granados was discovered unresponsive on the floor of his cell. Authorities believe his cellmate was present in the cell at the time of the death. The Homicide Unit is continuing its active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death, with support from State Police crime scene technicians and investigators from the DPSCS Internal Investigative Unit. Once the investigation is concluded, the findings will be submitted to the Office of the State’s Attorney in Allegany County for a thorough review and consideration of any potential charges.
