Approximately 149,400 portable generators manufactured by Generac have been recalled in the United States due to a defect that can cause fuel to leak from the carburetor, posing a significant risk of fire and burn injuries. The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), involves specific models of Generac portable generators that feature an orange and black cover and are housed in a steel-tube cradle. Consumers can identify the affected units by checking the model and serial numbers printed on a label affixed to the side of the generator.

The identified hazard occurs when consumers attempt to fill the generator with gasoline for the first time. A fuel leak from the carburetor during this process can ignite, leading to a potential fire or burn incident. However, the CPSC clarified that generators which have already been filled with enough gasoline to move the gauge off the “E” mark, or those that have been used without any observed fuel leakage, can continue to be operated safely. Generac has received 114 reports of fuel leaks associated with these generators, although no injuries have been reported to date.
The recall encompasses a range of Generac portable generator unit types and their corresponding model numbers, including GP3600 (G0077210), GP4000DF (G0081550), GP6500 (G0076802, G0076722), GP6500E (G0077130), GP6500EDF (G0081530), GP6700EDF (G0080620), GP8000E (G0077150, G0076754, G0081540), GP9200E (G0079712), and GP9500ETF (G0080630). These generators were sold nationwide and online at home improvement and hardware stores, such as Home Depot and Lowe’s, between May 2025 and February 2026. The purchase price for these units ranged from $600 to $1,300.
Consumers who own a Generac portable generator are urged to immediately stop using the recalled models and visit the Generac website at https://www.generac.com/about/recalls/GP-Carburetor. There, they can verify if their specific generator model and serial number are included in the recall.
