The ARC Grant Program supports projects that align with five key goals designed to strengthen the Appalachian region. These goals include fostering economic opportunities through entrepreneurship and business development, enhancing the workforce by improving education, skills, and health, and investing in critical infrastructure such as broadband, transportation, water, and wastewater systems. Additionally, the program supports initiatives that leverage natural and cultural assets for community and economic growth, as well as programs that build leadership capacity and advance community development.
To be considered for these grants, applicants must provide a 50% match of the total project cost, with these matching funds needing to be identified and committed at the time of application. Proposed projects are expected to demonstrate measurable outcomes and a clear economic impact. The process begins with the submission of a Preliminary Project Description and an ARC Project Budget and Funding Sources form to the Office of Grant Management.
Following the initial submission, the Washington County Commissioners will review and rank the submitted proposals. Projects that receive a high ranking from the county will then be forwarded to the Tri-County Council for Western Maryland for regional evaluation. Entities with top-ranking projects will receive an invitation in early fall to submit a full ARC grant application, which will be due in November.
Interested parties can obtain the necessary forms, the ARC Preliminary Project Description and the ARC Project Budget and Funding Sources, from the Office of Grant Management. Proposals can be submitted via email to Maria Kramer at mkramer@washco-md.net. Applicants should expect to receive a confirmation email within 24 business hours of submission. Any applicant who does not receive a confirmation should contact the Office of Grant Management directly at 240-313-2040. Further information about the Appalachian Regional Commission can be found on their official website, arc.gov.
