The newly unveiled Concourse A/B Connector and Baggage Handling System project encompasses a two-story addition spanning 142,000 square feet, alongside 78,000 square feet of renovated existing space. A central feature of this upgrade is the sophisticated in-line baggage handling system designed to process approximately 3,500 bags per hour, a notable increase from the previous system’s capacity of 2,100 bags per hour. Planning for this extensive project commenced in 2017, with construction beginning in early 2022.

Southwest Airlines, the airport’s largest carrier, will be the primary beneficiary of the new Concourse A/B Connector and Baggage Handling System. BWI Marshall Airport is a significant hub within the Southwest network, serving as its largest airport on the East Coast. The terminal enhancements are expected to provide Southwest Airlines with the necessary capacity to expand its operations at BWI. In fiscal year 2025, Southwest carried over 18 million passengers through BWI Marshall, operating approximately 230 daily flights to 82 domestic and international destinations. The airline also employs more than 5,000 individuals in the BWI Marshall Airport market.

The improvements include a direct connection between Concourses A and B, designed to streamline passenger flow. Five airline gate areas have been modernized, featuring advanced lighting, contemporary glass boarding bridges, energy-efficient electrochromic glass, and new seating equipped with integrated charging ports. The upgraded baggage handling system for Southwest Airlines is engineered for increased speed, improved reliability, and incorporates seven Explosive Detection System machines, with provisions for an additional unit. Furthermore, five existing baggage claim carousels have been replaced, and one new carousel has been installed to enhance service and prepare for future demand. The project also introduces state-of-the-art restrooms with enhanced lighting and modern amenities, aligning with the quality of other facilities at the airport.

In addition to passenger and baggage infrastructure, the project incorporates 14,000 square feet dedicated to new food and retail concessions, with an additional 28,000 square feet of flexible space available for future commercial development. Sustainability has also been a key consideration, with the integration of energy-efficient systems and the use of environmentally responsible materials, such as glulam engineered wood beams, which offer a reduced carbon footprint compared to steel.

The modernization of BWI Marshall Airport is anticipated to bolster its role as a vital transportation hub for Maryland and the broader National Capital region. The airport currently facilitates around 300 daily nonstop departures to approximately 90 domestic and international destinations. BWI Marshall Airport contributes an estimated $11.3 billion in economic impact annually to Maryland and the surrounding region, supporting over 107,000 jobs.

The opening of the Concourse A/B Connector and Baggage Handling System is expected to enhance travel efficiency, provide greater comfort for passengers, and support the continued economic development and global connectivity of Maryland.
