Sterling Sanders, a candidate for the Washington County Democratic Central Committee, recently discussed his vision for the Central Committee with us, bringing a platform focused on greater inclusivity, robust candidate support, and a more active approach to party leadership. Sanders, who previously ran for County Commissioner, stated his belief that the current central committee, which he respects greatly for their current efforts, can significantly improve support and communication for candidates, contributing to foster increased motivation and party unity.

Sanders identified a division within the local Democratic Party, characterizing it as a split between a corporate establishment wing and the growing Democratic Socialists of America branch in Hagerstown. He asserts that the current committee is not adequately welcoming to all factions, citing instances where far-left and conservative voices have been marginalized. To address this, Sanders proposes fostering an environment where uncomfortable conversations are welcomed, believing that open dialogue can bridge political divides and reveal common ground. He emphasized his personal experience of maintaining friendships across the political spectrum and his commitment to understanding diverse viewpoints.

“I love Washington County,” said Sanders. “People of Washington County deserve candidates who will represent them regardless of political beliefs.”

His vision for the Washington County Democratic Party involves creating new avenues for engagement through the establishment of local caucus groups and subcommittees, a model more commonly seen at the state level. Sanders suggests that these groups, focused on specific issues such as LGBTQ+ rights or organized labor, would empower passionate individuals to become more actively involved and contribute to party functions like fundraising, voter outreach, and community events. This approach, he argues, would delegate responsibilities and allow the central committee to focus on its core duties while benefiting from broader community participation.

Furthermore, Sanders highlighted the need for more thorough vetting and education of candidates. He expressed concern that individuals may run for office without a clear understanding of their roles or jurisdictions, particularly for prominent positions like state legislature. His plan includes educating candidates on specific issues and the demands of the offices they seek, ensuring that those on the ballot are well-prepared to represent the constituents of Washington County.

Sanders, who previously ran as a Green Party candidate for County Commissioner in 2018, withdrew from the race and then transitioned to the Democratic Party in the same year, running under the Democratic ticket for County Commissioner in 2022. He explained this shift by noting that while he maintains respectful relationships with Green Party members, he found their platform moving in a direction personally not comfortable for him. He also expressed a desire to participate in primaries, which led him to align with the Democratic Party. He believes that while the Green Party may find success in non-partisan races or in areas with a different political landscape, such as Baltimore, the two-party system in Maryland is mostly dominated by Democrats and Republicans, makes it challenging for third parties in partisan elections.

He aims to transform the Washington County Democratic Party into a model that the national party can admire, emphasizing the need for increased support for local labor unions. Sanders has received an endorsement from the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, a labor union that does not typically endorse central committee candidates, as well as endorsements from Maryland Delegate Schindler and numerous community members. Sanders noted that the Democratic Party has struggled to maintain visibility outside of Hagerstown and believes his proactive approach will help expand their reach to the rest of the county. He positions himself as an activist rather than a mere administrator, prepared to be a vocal advocate for the party’s advancement.

“I want to transform Washington County Democrat party into what the National DNC will admire and aspire to be,” said Sanders.
