Upon arrival, firefighters from the Frostburg Fire Department and surrounding companies encountered smoke and flames emanating from a first-floor bedroom of the single-family dwelling, which had been partitioned into two separate apartments. The incident escalated to a two-alarm fire, requiring the efforts of numerous firefighters to bring under control within approximately 15 minutes. Following the extinguishment of the fire, a deceased adult victim was located within the residence.
The victim has been preliminarily identified as a 50-year-old female resident. Her remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for official identification and to determine the precise cause of death. Investigators have determined that the fire originated in the victim’s bedroom, but the specific cause of the ignition remains under active investigation. It was noted that smoke alarms were present and had been activated by the fire. However, investigators also confirmed that the victim had pre-existing medical conditions that impacted her mobility, rendering her unable to evacuate the premises. Another adult male occupant, who was not present at the time of the fire, has been displaced by the incident. The apartment located above the affected unit was found to be unoccupied.
The Maryland State Police Crime Scene Unit, along with K9 “Blondie,” provided assistance at the scene, a standard protocol when fatal fires occur. The investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is a collaborative effort between the relevant law enforcement agency and the Office of the State Fire Marshal, as is customary in cases involving a fatality.
This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the importance of fire safety. Residents are urged to ensure their smoke alarms are functioning properly and to establish and practice a home escape plan. In the event of a fire, the recommended course of action is to evacuate the building immediately and remain outside.
