A tenant of the building first discovered the fire and attempted to control it using a fire extinguisher. Before the Frostburg Fire Department arrived, the occupant, with assistance from city workers, successfully extinguished the flames. Their efforts were credited with preventing further damage to the structure.
The apartment building, which was not equipped with smoke alarms or a fire suppression system in the affected area, sustained an estimated $7,500 in damage. Five firefighters responded to the single-alarm call, though the blaze had already been put out upon their arrival.
