On March 1, 1976, authorities in Bethesda, Maryland, were alerted to a disturbing scene at the Bishop family home. Upon investigation, they discovered the bodies of Bishop’s wife, Annette, then 37 years old, and their three sons: Samuel, 5; Thomas, 10; and William, 14. The victims had allegedly been bludgeoned to death with a blunt instrument. The subsequent investigation revealed that William Bradford Bishop Jr. had meticulously planned his escape and the disposal of the bodies.
Following the discovery of his family’s murders, Bishop allegedly embarked on a cross-country journey with the bodies. Evidence suggests he transported them to Columbia, North Carolina, where he is believed to have buried them in a shallow grave and attempted to destroy the evidence by setting them on fire. This act of alleged brutality and calculated concealment marked the beginning of his long flight from justice. In March of 1976, Bishop was charged locally with murder by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Rockville, Maryland. Simultaneously, federal charges were filed, accusing him of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Bishop, born on August 1, 1936, was 39 years old at the time of the murders. He stood 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighed approximately 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was a seasoned outdoorsman with extensive camping and hiking experience, particularly in Africa, where he had learned to fly and was a licensed amateur pilot. His background also included academic achievements, with an American Studies degree from Yale University and a Master’s Degree in Italian from Middlebury College. He was fluent in several languages, including English, French, Italian, Serbo-Croatian, and Spanish, reflecting his career as a Foreign Service Officer.
Information gathered during the investigation provided insights into Bishop’s personality and potential motives. He was described as an intense and self-absorbed individual, prone to violent outbursts. He was known to prefer a neat and orderly environment and reportedly suffered from insomnia, having received psychiatric care and medication for depression in the past. His reported consumption of scotch and wine, along with a liking for peanuts and spicy food, were also noted details. A significant observation was that Bishop was a voracious reader and may have kept a diary or journal, a potential repository of his thoughts and intentions that investigators have long sought.
Bishop has several distinguishing marks, including a six-inch vertical surgical scar on his lower back. Aliases associated with him include Brad Bishop, Bradford Bishop, Bradford Bishop Jr., W. Bradford Bishop, W. Bradford Bishop Jr., and William Bradford Bishopp. Authorities have emphasized that Bishop should be considered armed and extremely dangerous, with a strong possibility of suicidal tendencies.
Despite decades of extensive investigation and man-hunts, William Bradford Bishop Jr. has evaded capture. His ability to disappear and remain undetected for so long is a testament to his alleged planning and the challenges inherent in such long-term fugitive investigations. The FBI has placed him on its “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list at various times, highlighting the seriousness of the case and the commitment to bringing him to justice. The motive behind the horrific crime remains a subject of intense speculation, but the overwhelming evidence points to Bishop as the perpetrator of this profound tragedy.
The investigation is ongoing, and the FBI continues to seek information regarding William Bradford Bishop Jr.’s whereabouts. Any individual with knowledge pertaining to this case is urged to contact their local FBI office or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate. Public assistance is crucial in solving this decades-old mystery and providing some measure of closure to the enduring pain caused by this crime.
