Residents of Hagerstown are invited to a series of community events hosted by local churches throughout October and November, offering opportunities for connection, learning, and family fun. These gatherings, organized by HARC (Hagerstown Area Religious Coalition) and individual congregations, aim to bring people together for a variety of purposes, from cultural exchange to charitable support.

The month of October kicks off with an open house at the Islamic Society of Western Maryland on Saturday, October 18th, from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Located at 2036 Day Road, this event provides an opportunity for the community to meet Muslim neighbors, observe a live prayer, tour the mosque, and enjoy free refreshments and a question-and-answer session.
Also on Saturday, October 18th, the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren at 15 S. Mulberry Street will host a Fall Festival and Trick or Treat from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This family-friendly event promises a variety of activities including food, games, a moon bounce, children’s crafts, a balloon artist, bingo, and a costume contest. All activities are free of charge.
The following Thursday, October 20th, St. John’s Episcopal Church at 101 S. Prospect Street will hold a celebration of new ministry and installation service for Rev. Dr. Richard R. Swanson at 7:00 PM. A light fare reception will be held from 5:15 PM to 6:30 PM for those who RSVP by October 22nd to Lbmassey@verizon.net.
Mid-week on Tuesday, October 21st, Otterbein United Methodist Church at 108 E. Franklin Street will host a food drop from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This event is particularly recommended for individuals and families within WIC income guidelines, with an example provided of a family of four earning less than $40,793. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own grocery-style tote bags for food and produce. Later on Tuesday, October 21st, Emmanuel United Methodist Church at 802 Summit Avenue will hold its South End Fall Festival from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, co-hosted by King Kreations Bakery. This event will feature sweets and treats in the church parking lot and is open to all.
As October concludes, Trinity Lutheran Church at 15 Randolph Avenue will provide parking and seating for the Mummer’s Parade on Saturday, October 25th, beginning at 5:30 PM. Reserved seating is available for $7 for the front row and $5 for the second row, with parking also at $5. Food will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Randolph Community Outreach food pantry. Reservations can be made by calling the church office at 301-733-2878.
The Unitarian Universalist Church at 13245 Cearfoss Pike will host “Stories in the Round” on Monday, October 27th, at 7:00 PM, featuring Renee Spears Emanuel. The evening promises witty tall tales and folk tales from around the world, intended to promote love and inspire peace.
Moving into November, Christ’s Reformed Church at 130 W. Franklin Street will host a Fall Vendor Event on Saturday, November 1st, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, in conjunction with Jonathan Hager Week. The event will include food trucks and various vendors. Those interested in participating as a vendor can contact Jenny at 301-733-4144.
Finally, Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Hall at 15 Randolph Avenue will host a New Tutor Training session on Saturday, November 8th, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The Literacy Council of Washington County is seeking volunteer tutors to assist adults with basic education and English language learning. The council provides free training, materials, and ongoing support, and currently has approximately 12 students on a waiting list.
