According to the ICE statement, on September 12, officers initiated a traffic stop to apprehend Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, an individual identified as a criminal alien. Villegas-Gonzalez reportedly resisted arrest and drove his vehicle at law enforcement officers. During this encounter, one ICE officer was struck by the vehicle and dragged a considerable distance. In response to the immediate threat to his life and the safety of others, the officer discharged his firearm. The agency asserts that the officer acted in accordance with his training and utilized appropriate force to uphold the law and ensure public and officer safety.
Following the incident, despite sustaining multiple injuries, the injured ICE officer and his partner reportedly provided emergency medical care to Villegas-Gonzalez. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The injured officer has since been released from the hospital.
The ICE officer who discharged his weapon has been with the agency since 2021. His law enforcement career includes prior service with another federal agency, experience as an EMT, and military service. This marked his first use of his firearm in a force incident. The agency highlighted that both officers involved in the operation were described as seasoned and trained professionals. The partner officer was noted as having been among the first responders to a terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve.
The individual targeted in the operation, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, is described by ICE as a criminal alien with a history of reckless driving. His date and time of entry into the country were not specified.
The agency expressed concern over what it termed “smears and misleading reporting” following the incident, suggesting such narratives contribute to increased resistance and assaults against ICE officers. ICE indicated that viral social media content and calls for aliens to resist law enforcement endanger public safety and the well-being of both officers and those being apprehended.
This incident underscores the growing challenges faced by immigration enforcement officers and the potential dangers inherent in their operations. The agency’s statement aims to provide a factual account and counter what it describes as misinformation surrounding the events.
