The operation began with a vehicle stop intended to apprehend Villegas-Gonzalez. However, the subject reportedly refused to comply with law enforcement commands and instead drove his vehicle at the officers present. During this action, one ICE officer was struck by the car and dragged a considerable distance. In response to the perceived threat to his life, the officer discharged his weapon. Villegas-Gonzalez was pronounced deceased at the scene. The injured ICE officer sustained multiple injuries and is currently in stable condition.
This incident occurs amidst a reported 1000% increase in assaults against ICE law enforcement officers as they conduct enforcement activities. Officials noted that the target of the operation, Villegas-Gonzalez, had a prior record of reckless driving. His date and time of entry into the country were not specified.
