According to a press release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a significant law enforcement incident unfolded early this morning at the ICE Broadview Processing Center. Over one hundred individuals reportedly surrounded the facility, engaging in actions that included assaults on law enforcement personnel, the throwing of tear gas canisters, and damage to vehicles by slashing tires. Demonstrators also allegedly blocked the entrance to the processing center and trespassed on adjacent private property. In response to the events, federal law enforcement took three individuals into custody.

The press release indicated that vans were observed arriving and departing throughout the morning, suggesting a potentially organized effort to disrupt the operations of ICE. This incident occurs amid reports of a substantial increase in assaults against ICE enforcement officers, with a stated rise of over 1000%. The release also highlighted recent instances where vehicles were allegedly used as weapons against ICE officers.
ICE has linked the unrest at the Broadview Processing Center to critical remarks made by political figures, including Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, regarding the agency. Governor Pritzker is quoted as having suggested that the United States is nearing a state comparable to Nazi Germany due to ICE’s activities. Mayor Johnson reportedly referred to ICE as “secret police” and accused them of “terrorizing our communities.”
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, as stated in the release, condemned the violent actions directed at law enforcement in Illinois and called for an end to such demonstrations. She emphasized that ICE officers dedicate themselves to protecting the public and asserted that rhetoric from certain Democratic politicians, including Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson, contributes to an increase in assaults on ICE officers. The Assistant Secretary specifically mentioned comparisons of ICE to the “Nazi gestapo” and the perceived glorification of rioters as contributing to a dangerous environment for law enforcement. The release stated that this violence against ICE must cease.
The release further asserted that the individuals involved in these demonstrations and the politicians criticized are choosing to support individuals involved in criminal activities over victims. This statement comes in the context of ICE’s “Midway Blitz Operation,” which has reportedly led to the arrest of hundreds of undocumented individuals with criminal histories. These arrests include members of the Tren de Aragua gang and individuals with prior convictions for offenses such as murder, sexual assault of a child, sexual assault, felony assault, domestic violence, stalking, drug trafficking, armed robbery, and vehicular robbery.
