The Hagerstown facility is distinguished by its advanced digital capabilities, with Hitachi Rail investing over $30 million in technological enhancements to make it the company’s most sophisticated operation globally. The factory will feature AI-powered video analytics and proximity alert technology designed to enhance passenger safety. Operations will be monitored and managed through advanced digital systems, including GlobalLogic and Hitachi Digital Services, ensuring transparency and quality control throughout the manufacturing and supply chain processes. An immersive customer experience center will also be integrated into the site, utilizing AI to showcase Hitachi’s product capabilities.
Hitachi Rail has committed to operating the Hagerstown facility as carbon-neutral. This will be achieved through the use of solar energy generated on-site or exclusively procured from renewable sources. The company plans to implement an AI analytics system, H-Vision, to closely monitor and manage energy and water consumption, aiming to reduce energy waste. These sustainability efforts, combined with the planting of over 400 trees and trellises around the site and a commitment to zero landfill waste from the outset, are expected to result in an annual reduction of more than 800,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions.
The strategic location of the factory in Washington County, a known hub for distribution and logistics, underscores its importance for Hitachi Rail’s expansion in North America. The facility will immediately begin fulfilling orders for railcar fleets destined for various metro systems. This initiative is part of a broader effort to bolster Maryland’s position as a center for global investment in future-focused industries. The collaboration between Hitachi and the state highlights the potential for economic growth through advanced manufacturing and technological innovation.
The opening of this facility is also indicative of the strong economic ties between Maryland and Japan. In 2023, trade between the two entities reached over $6.1 billion, supporting more than 5,500 jobs in Maryland. Japanese companies have established a significant presence in the state, investing substantially in new facilities and creating numerous jobs, particularly in the life sciences and manufacturing sectors. This ongoing partnership is expected to drive further economic development and job creation within Maryland.
