According to Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown, a significant court decision aims to dismantle Google’s dominance in the search engine market and foster greater competition, ultimately benefiting consumers. The legal challenge argued that Google’s pervasive influence as the primary internet gateway has stifled competition and limited consumer choices. In August 2024, a federal district court in Washington D.C. delivered a pivotal ruling, affirming that Google had indeed abused its monopoly power, thereby harming consumers in both online search and related advertising markets. In response to this ruling, the coalition of 38 attorneys general, alongside the Department of Justice, put forth a comprehensive set of proposed remedies designed to re-establish a competitive landscape. These proposed solutions are intended to stimulate innovation within the search engine sector and ensure a fairer marketplace for all users. Maryland and its partner states are committed to closely observing the implementation and effects of these remedies, and will consider further legal action if necessary to ensure the restoration of a level playing field.
