The Ford Motor Company is initiating a recall affecting approximately 2,361 of its 2022 model year F-150 trucks. The core of the issue lies in the execution of previous recall remedies, specifically recalls 22C22 (also identified as 22V-686) and 23C36 (also identified as 23V-802). Ford’s internal investigation indicated that while these repairs were recorded as completed, the necessary software remedy may not have been properly installed in all instances. This means that the underlying condition associated with those recalls could still be present in the affected F-150 trucks.

The defect specifically relates to the vehicle’s parking lamps. The potential problem could manifest as flickering parking lamps under certain conditions, which is a violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108, pertaining to lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment. The flickering could occur when the driver manually activates the “position lamp on” mode, selects “Headlamp On” mode, or when the vehicle is driven in automatic headlamp mode and the system transitions to night mode. The safety risk associated with this condition is an increased likelihood of a crash due to the parking lamps not maintaining a steady burn as required. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to this specific recall.

The cause of the problem is attributed to an issue with the service tool used by technicians to upload the software update. In some cases, the tool did not successfully install the correct software onto the vehicle’s system, despite records indicating the repair was completed. This discrepancy between the service tool’s software status at the time of installation and the actual software released for field service was identified through internal audits.

Ford began investigating this issue in late November 2024 after it was flagged in a quality office forum. An audit of field service actions revealed insufficient data to confirm correct software application in all cases. This led to the formation of a cross-functional team in December 2024 to audit all relevant software field service actions. The team created templates to track software lineage and began auditing current software levels for affected vehicles. By July 28, 2025, the audit of recalls 22C22 and 23C36 was completed, identifying specific vehicles that had been recorded as remedied but were found to have non-compliant software. Ford officially notified NHTSA of this concern on December 19, 2024, and presented its plan to address the mismatched vehicles. The Field Review Committee reviewed and approved a field action on August 1, 2025.

To rectify the situation, Ford will notify owners by mail, instructing them to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership. At the dealership, technicians will replace the Light Emitting Diode (LED) Control Module and perform a Body Control Module (BCM) new module initialization procedure using the Ford Diagnostic Service Tool (FDRS). Following this, the software part numbers will be validated using a Software Validation Form before the service action is closed. This service will be provided to owners at no cost.

For owners who may have already paid for the necessary repairs before receiving this notification, Ford has a general reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA, which was established in May 2023. Owners may be eligible for reimbursement for these expenses in accordance with that plan.

Ford expects to notify dealers about the recall on September 15, 2025. Owner notification letters are also scheduled to be mailed beginning September 15, 2025, and completion is anticipated by September 19, 2025. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) will be searchable on September 15, 2025, allowing owners to check their vehicle’s recall status.
