Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall affecting 10,627 vehicles due to a software issue that may prevent proper trailer brake functionality. The recall, identified by NHTSA as 25V-132 and internally as 25S15, impacts several 2021-2022 models, including the F-150, Super Duty trucks (F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550), Expedition, Maverick, and Lincoln Navigator. The affected vehicles did not receive the correct Integrated Trailer Relay Module (ITRM) software during a previous recall (22S17), posing a safety risk when towing trailers with electric or electric-over-hydraulic brake systems.

The problem arose when Ford’s service tool failed to install the correct software during repairs, despite records indicating the remedy had been applied. This issue could lead to a loss of trailer brake functionality, increasing the risk of accidents due to extended stopping distances. Ford’s audit found that 97.1% of the vehicles repaired under the prior recall had the correct software installed, but some vehicles still require an update.
Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification by mail, instructing them to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer for a software update at no cost. The software part numbers will be validated to ensure the remedy is correctly applied. The dealer notification is scheduled for April 14, 2025, with owner letters expected between April 14 and April 18, 2025. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

This recall follows an internal investigation by Ford’s Critical Concern Group (CCRG) that began in late 2024, revealing inconsistencies in software application during field service actions. The investigation included a comprehensive audit of the software installed on affected vehicles, leading to the identification of those requiring the update. Ford will also offer reimbursement to owners who paid for the repair before the recall was announced, in line with NHTSA guidelines.
