According to a safety recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling over 121,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L vehicles from model years 2023 and 2024 due to a potential defect in second-row head restraints. The affected headrests may not lock upright as required by federal safety standards, increasing the risk of injury in certain crash scenarios.

The recall involves two vehicle models: 43,241 units of the 2023-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, produced between May 16, 2023 and January 30, 2024, and 78,157 units of the 2023-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, manufactured from May 16, 2023 through May 2, 2024. The defect stems from an interference condition in the internal locking mechanism of the headrest, which may prevent it from securing in an upright position. This could result in the headrest height falling below the required 750 mm standard established by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 202a.
Chrysler discovered the issue through an internal investigation launched in August 2024 and determined in July 2025 that affected vehicles were noncompliant with safety regulations. There are currently no warning indicators for the problem prior to failure, and headrests that fail to lock upright remain folded forward. No reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue have been cited so far.

To remedy the issue, FCA US will inspect all affected vehicles and replace the faulty headrests if necessary. Owners will begin receiving recall notifications starting September 5, 2025. The manufacturer encourages vehicle owners to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for recall status starting July 24, 2025. Replacement parts will not include the interference condition that caused the original defect.
Residents who own one of the affected Jeep vehicles are advised to ensure their second-row headrests are functional and to await official instructions for the free inspection and repair. There is no immediate “do not drive” advisory, but faulty headrests may compromise passenger safety in the event of a collision.
