A major recall impacting over 850,000 households across the U.S. was announced this week due to a safety hazard involving the Pura 4 Smart Home Fragrance Diffuser. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the diffuser’s detachable cover contains magnets that may come loose and pose a life-threatening ingestion risk to children. The recall includes devices sold nationwide and online between August 2023 and May 2025.

The problem centers on five embedded magnets—three small and two larger—that are part of the diffuser’s front cover. If detached and swallowed, these high-powered magnets can attract each other or other metal objects within the digestive system, potentially causing severe complications including intestinal blockages, perforations, infections, and even death. While three incidents of detached magnets have been reported, no injuries have yet been confirmed.
Customers who own the affected diffusers are being advised to immediately discard the current cover, keep the units out of children’s and pets’ reach, and contact Pura Scents for a free replacement. The recall covers units with serial numbers ranging from JX230000001 to JX230801425 and JX240000001 to JX240049959. Pura Scents is proactively contacting all known buyers.

The diffusers were sold through major retailers and online platforms including Amazon, Target, Scheels, and the company’s website for around $50. Though the devices were manufactured in China and imported by Utah-based Pura Scents Inc., the issue has broader implications for consumer safety, especially for families with young children. Customers can contact Pura Scents by phone, email, or through its website for more information and instructions on receiving a replacement.
