On the night of July 8, a deputy with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office pulled over a vehicle on westbound Interstate 70 near New Design Road for an equipment violation. Suspecting criminal drug activity, the deputy summoned a K9 unit, which allegedly detected the presence of narcotics. A search of the vehicle uncovered 33 containers of suspected fentanyl totaling approximately 45.7 grams and 12 containers of suspected cocaine weighing about 8.4 grams. The suspected drugs were found concealed on the passenger, per FCSO.

The passenger, identified as 38-year-old Thomas Smallwood of Cumberland, Maryland, was arrested on the spot. Smallwood is currently under supervision for a previous armed robbery conviction in Baltimore City from 2022 and is being held without bond at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center.
