In Chestertown, Kent County, a lightning strike ignited a fire at a single-family home on Augustine Herman Highway around 7:52 p.m. The homeowner discovered the blaze, which originated inside the structure and required 40 firefighters from the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company to bring it under control in just over 30 minutes. The fire caused an estimated $200,000 in structural damage and $60,000 in contents loss. No smoke alarms or fire protection systems were present in the residence. A family dog was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to a local veterinarian.
Roughly the same time in Talbot County, a passerby reported a fire at Faith Chapel United Methodist Church on Bruceville Road in Trappe. The blaze, determined to have started in the exterior wall and roof area due to a lightning strike that hit the building’s gas piping, caused an estimated $25,000 in damages. No injuries were reported, and the fire was brought under control within 20 minutes by 25 firefighters from the Trappe Volunteer Fire Company. As with the Chestertown incident, the church lacked both smoke alarms and sprinkler systems.

Earlier in the day, a fire ignited by lightning struck a home in Sykesville, Carroll County, damaging a single-story residence on Obrecht Road. The fire, which started in the basement storage room, caused an estimated $100,000 in damage. Fortunately, the home was equipped with functioning smoke alarms that activated, alerting the homeowner. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes by 25 firefighters from the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department.
None of the incidents resulted in any arrests, and all were determined to be natural in cause. Residents are reminded of the importance of smoke alarms and surge protection, especially during severe weather events. Lightning-related fires, though rare, can pose significant risks to structures and life safety, particularly when fire detection systems are absent.
