Responding to a call around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday evening, firefighters from the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, along with units from surrounding areas, arrived at the scene located at 6904 Pentridge Court. They were met with a fully engulfed, approximately 5,000-square-foot residence. Emergency responders were informed that one individual remained inside while five other family members had managed to evacuate.
Due to the severe structural damage and partial collapse of the home, firefighters primarily focused on exterior suppression efforts. To aid in the recovery and investigation process, heavy machinery, including excavators, were called to the scene to assist with the removal of debris.
Deputy State Fire Marshals worked through the night to sift through the wreckage. The victim, identified as Charles William Heaps, 68, was ultimately located beneath layers of debris. The surviving occupants, who were in a different section of the home at the time of the explosion, included the victim’s wife, children, and grandchildren. Sadly, a family pet also perished in the incident.
According to statements from the family and initial scene examinations, investigators believe the explosion preceded the widespread fire. Evidence suggests that Mr. Heaps was in close proximity to a wood stove when the event occurred.
While the precise cause of the explosion remains under investigation, authorities are considering potential triggers such as propane vapors and an electrical event. The extensive damage has rendered the home a total loss, with estimated damages reaching $2,000,000.
The Maryland State Police are collaborating with the Office of the State Fire Marshal in this ongoing investigation, which is standard protocol for fatal fire incidents. Residents are reminded to ensure their heating equipment is properly maintained and to be vigilant for any unusual odors or conditions within their homes that could indicate the presence of flammable gases or vapors.
