The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Recall No. 25V432 involves 1,658 light-duty trucks manufactured during a limited timeframe in September 2018. Affected models include the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, as well as the 2019 versions of the GMC Sierra 2500, 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500. Each of these vehicles was produced with airbag inflators sourced from a specific supplier lot now suspected of being defective. General Motors estimates about 1% of the recalled vehicles may actually have the flaw.
The problem centers around the roof-rail airbag inflators, which may rupture or separate at the end cap even when the vehicle is not in use. In such a case, compressed gas can violently expel components into the cabin, posing a risk of injury to occupants. While the issue is believed to be rare, GM confirmed at least one incident involving an unoccupied 2018 Silverado where the airbag inflator failed without deployment. An investigation traced the problem to a specific production lot supplied by Joyson Safety Systems.

Owners of affected vehicles should expect official notification starting August 11, 2025. Dealers will replace both the left and right roof-rail airbag modules with new parts from a verified safe production lot at no cost to consumers. In the meantime, GM is advising drivers not to park these vehicles indoors or in close proximity to people or structures, due to the risk of spontaneous airbag component failure.
This recall does not affect Regular Cab or Double Cab models, and it only applies to vehicles assembled with inflators from the faulty batch. Vehicle owners can check their VIN for inclusion in the recall starting June 25, 2025, using GM or NHTSA’s online tools. Until then, caution is urged for owners of the listed models.
