According to officials, Rodriguez’s explosive device was thrown at a hotel housing the officers during a temporary deployment to the city. The attack failed to injure anyone, but the intent raised serious concerns about the safety of federal personnel and the potential for civilian harm in a densely populated area. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) brought the case to the U.S. Attorney’s Office two days later, initiating federal prosecution.

Authorities emphasized that Rodriguez was already wanted for violating parole and has previously been convicted of multiple offenses including assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. Law enforcement officials cited a broader trend of increased attacks on ICE officers in recent months, noting a fivefold rise in such incidents.

While no residents were physically harmed in this incident, the attempted arson underscores a growing climate of political hostility that could endanger the broader community.
