The charges stem from a federal investigation targeting narcotics distribution and are part of a broader national enforcement initiative.

The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is linked to Operation Take Back America, a nationwide effort supported by the U.S. Department of Justice. This initiative focuses on dismantling drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and it integrates federal resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.
If convicted, Melendez-Morales faces up to 30 years in prison, a substantial fine, and supervised release. His sentencing, if found guilty, will be determined by a federal judge following the federal sentencing guidelines.

While the charges are serious, it is important to note that an indictment is not a conviction. All individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Zenzinger.
